Recording screen activity to create a tutorial or for other similar purposes requires an application capable of capturing the screen area you need and there are lot out there that you can choose from. With a rather dull, but suggestive name, Screen Recorder is an open-source alternative to paid video capturing software, providing the basic set of tools you need to create video tutorials.
Record the desktop, a window or a specific area
Screen Recorder is easily deployed, welcoming you with its straightforward and intuitive interface. All the controls are comprised in a single window, with few menus and options to deal with. Thus, using the application shouldn’t pose any problem, regardless of your experience.
The application displays control buttons for the recording process, enabling you to start, pause, stop or cancel it with a single click. Furthermore, the main window includes options that enable you to choose the screen area to record, be it the entire desktop, a specific window or a fixed-size region.
Configure the recording process
There are not many settings to tamper with, but Screen Recorder does allow you to change the output directory and choose whether to include the mouse cursor in your videos or not.
You can define custom hot keys to help you start, pause, stop or cancel the recording even if the application is not on focus, change the video compressor, modify the output frame rate and thus, alter the quality of the recording. The result is saved to AVI format only, without any possibility to change this default setting.
A video recorder that needs further improvements
Screen Recorder does its job well, but at the moment it lacks some features that power users usually look for in an application of its type, such as adding watermarks for copyright protection or scheduling recordings. Moreover, the video cannot be previewed, the output format is limited to AVI videos and you cannot accompany the video file with sound captured from a microphone. However, if you want to quickly record what’s going on on the screen, you can definitely use it.
